Shepton carries on regardless

Despite some extended roadworks and a great deal of scaffolding, Shepton Mallet's Friday Market and the shoppers that used it carried on regardless today.

Part of the marketplace remained unoccupied by stallholders as work carried on with the restoration of the historic market cross, but elsewhere in the lower part of the High Street shoppers could buy quality fresh produce and meat.

Further down in Town Street things remained quiet following the extended daytime closure of two important routes into town for road works.  As one local man put it "Some shops in the town are having work done, although it was well overdue.  Add to that the appearance of the cross at the moment, which also really needed doing to be fair, then the closed shops and the state of the old cafe and wasteland opposite, by the police station, the roadworks were all we needed!".

One can only hope that this is just a blip; The work to the cross and the shops will greatly improve the look of the Town for those who come in the future.  The only question remaining is, how will we attract them here?
