I am delighted to report that we won the Referendum! Though a low turnout (488) we achieved a resounding success by achieving 438 electors voting NO to a new Civic Centre + its attendant debt on the next 3 generations, whilst only 50 people were in favour ! This resounding message must surely wake up those Councillors who are so out of touch with their constituents! They really have to face the facts: Shepton people have common sense, unlike many Councillors who have been pursuing a pipe dream - it really is time for them to realise that their positions on the Town Council is to reflect the opinions of the electorate, and not their own individual pipe dreams! I want to thank all those who voted, and supported our common sense campaign. Whilst I retired yesterday, I now regard my future as being more available to those who need advice and support, and am more than willing to take up any issues that deserve support. I will not be silenced! Again, many thanks for all the support given during this campaign!

Well done Irene! What a resounding success for the people we have seen in the last couple of weeks. First the Skate Park and now the Civic Hall. This is what democracy is all about!!

Good call Irene, worked out that the town has no pressing desire to put itself in debt for the next few decades. I was going to reply to the thread earlier but doing a little research into marriage rates since 1862 (google that) the mere mention of weddings as justification just showed it folly.

    OFF-TOPIC
If they were going to start some building design my fist call would be redress the projects that "Almost worked" from previous generations - lop the top off the Amulet (or make it glass) so it doesn't sit like a wart on the face of the town and the church was visible again. I'm not religious but we have some great buildings hidden behind no so great.
It is probably considered bad form to denigrate the Amulet bearing its origins but fix what's not working before building new.

I agree with StuCapon. The Amulet is already there, lets do something with that to make it a more desirable building. When I used to go there in my late teens the place used to be packed every Friday and Saturday night. I don't really know where it all went wrong. Think it was probably down to some people moaning about young people enjoying themselves - same old story!
