This is a great Indian Restaurant and a reason to visit Shepton Mallet in itself. I had a fantastic meal there recently, and although it was busy, the staff dealt with it with great humor and gave a little banter, which was great. Recommended.

I often think that you can learn more about a business from when things don't go smoothly than from when they do. Recently, for example, I ordered my beloved Dall Palook from the Mughal Empire, and in a millitary grade exercise that involved getting different takeaway foods for different people, got home and was disappointed to find Tarka Dall. Not the end of the world, but for me, a good curry has to have a hot dish and something with lentils and spinach. The Mughal Empire could not have been more apologetic/helpful and replaced my dish, letting me keep the original. I get consistently superb service and am a huge fan of the food. I recommend this place wholeheartedly and if you aren't happy - tell them. They are brilliant, and want to see you pleased. What more can you ask for?!

ReportThis place is run by really really really nice men who treat me like royalty (opening the door is such a nice touch). I always enjoy the chicken tikka massala. I dont eat Indian food very often and when I have had the same thing at a pub or at the place my daughter took me in Bath it just wasn't the same. Recommended.
Indian restaurants can fall foul of a few pitfalls. These can include the food having primarily one flavor, or possibly the surroundings not quite living up to the menu.
The Mughal empire avoids these potential pitfalls with grace. The food is excellent (I am a huge fan of their dhal palook) and the service is incredibly well mannered even under pressure.
I have not given the full 5 stars for the following reason:
- The food is SO good, it means you compare it to the very best, such as those Indian restaurants you find in Birmingham, Manchester and London - also worthy of a mention in such a list is Wells' Cafe Romna.
- The service is excellent, although I have ended up with the wrong takeaway (twice) when they have been under immense pressure, and witnessed people having waiting a long time for food or drinks. This, it should be said, is just plain and simply a result of their success
- Ambience wise, it is perfecly nice, and the surroundings are good with nice decor and branded accessories, but the walkway between the tables on each side of the room is just too narrow and unfortunately was not addressed during their refit. This interrupts eat in diners and can be difficult and embarrassing for take away customers.
When all is said and done though, these criticisms are only being made because the place is *that* good. Highly recommended.
